Infonetics Research: Content security market maintains growth in a quarter that decimated many IT segments

CAMPBELL, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/25/09 -- Market research firm Infonetics Research released the 1Q09 edition of its Content Security Appliances and Software report. Highlights follow.

ANALYST NOTE

"The content security gateway market managed growth in a quarter that decimated many other IT segments. Network security titan Cisco posted roughly a 20% decrease in overall security revenue, yet an 8% increase in content security revenue. The main reason the content security market is faring well is reactive buying: most vendors confirm that many customers make investments in content security as needed due to problems in the network. In many cases, this lack of planning makes it impossible to stop spending on content security. Other factors driving growth in content security include the increasing popularity of cloud-based services and SaaS, and the need to comply with government security regulations," said Jeff Wilson, Infonetics Research's Principal Analyst for Network Security.

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

-- Content security gateway revenue was up 2.2% 4Q08 to 1Q09, hitting
    $535.7 million
-- In 1Q09, McAfee ranks first in worldwide content security gateway
revenue (appliances and software), Websense ranks second, and Blue Coat and
Symantec are neck and neck for third
-- Virtualization and cloud computing are growing trends in the content
    security market

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
