VMware and Partners Deliver Enterprise Hybrid Cloud: VMware vCloud Datacenter Services Available From BlueLock, Colt and Verizon

New VMware vCloud Connector Offers Enterprises Easy and Secure Enterprise Hybrid Cloud Management

PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/08/11 -- VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced it has reached a milestone in delivering the enterprise hybrid cloud with the availability of VMware vCloud® Datacenter services from BlueLock and Colt and beta services available from Verizon. VMware also introduced VMware vCloud Connector, a free plug-in that will allow all VMware vSphere® administrators to immediately begin deploying and managing virtual machines (VMs) across VMware vCloud Powered cloud services from within the VMware vSphere Client™.

A new study from IDG Research(1), sponsored by VMware, shows two-thirds of enterprises are adopting or planning to adopt cloud computing, primarily driven by the need to deliver improved business agility. The study reveals concerns over security and control may be limiting enterprise adoption of cloud -- nearly 90 percent of the more than 600 IT decision makers polled reported they would likely expand their use of cloud if they were assured of security equal to or better than that of their own datacenters. VMware vCloud Datacenter services address this concern, along with the other top requirements enterprises consider when transitioning to cloud: high performance (reliability and availability), quality of service and application portability.

"Enterprise-class cloud services have the potential to revolutionize IT," said Mathew Lodge, senior director, cloud services, VMware. "Enterprise IT organizations have been stymied by an inability to get the required performance, security and application portability from commodity public clouds. With vCloud Datacenter Services and vCloud Connector, VMware and its partners provide an evolutionary path to an IT revolution for millions of existing datacenter applications."

VMware vCloud Datacenter services combine the agility of the public cloud with the security, performance and application portability that enterprises demand. Built on VMware secure cloud infrastructure, including VMware vSphere, VMware vCloud Director™ and VMware vShield™, VMware vCloud Datacenter Services are architected and certified by VMware. By providing globally consistent cloud infrastructure, management and security, vCloud Datacenter services make it possible for enterprise customers to move computing workloads from internal virtualized infrastructure to any VMware vCloud Datacenter service and back.

Delivering hybrid cloud management, VMware today introduced VMware vCloud Connector, which will give VMware vSphere administrators a "single pane of glass" across vSphere infrastructure and VMware vCloud Powered public and private clouds. Users simply enter their cloud credentials and can start viewing and transferring VMs, vApps, and templates between the three.

"As a leading provider of CRM and ERP solutions, a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to cloud computing was not ideal for us as our business needs required greater application portability and flexibility," said Kristen Hayes, director, Global Infrastructure and Security, Consona. "BlueLock Virtual Datacenter, a VMware vCloud Datacenter Service, provided public cloud technology compatible with our internal VMware technologies, allowing our IT team to move quickly, deal with unknown future needs and move resources as needed."

By collaborating with VMware vCloud Powered service providers, VMware solution providers can extend their engagements to include hybrid cloud services, allowing their customers to benefit from the agility of cloud computing with the security, performance and application portability they need. With over 3,600 providers, the VMware service provider program has grown more than 145 percent in the last 12 months.

vCloud Datacenter Services Availability
VMware vCloud Datacenter Services are available now through US-based BlueLock (, pan-European service provider Colt (, and via beta from global service provider Verizon ( VMware vCloud Datacenter partners Terremark ( and SingTel ( offer cloud services based on VMware technology today and are developing vCloud Datacenter services as well.

vCloud Connector Availability
vCloud Connector will be available for free download in Q1 2011.

VMware vCloud Datacenter Service Provider comments on the news

"The cloud is changing the way enterprises manage and procure IT resources. By expanding our portfolio with a hybrid cloud offering, Verizon is ensuring enterprise clients have the right cloud solution to meet their individual requirements while further delivering on our 'everything-as-a-service' strategy that allows users to consume information from any device, virtually anytime, anywhere."
-- Kerry Bailey, group vice president of Verizon cloud services

"The Colt and VMware partnership has resulted in a truly enterprise-class, best of breed cloud service that is available in Europe providing scale and flexibility for Virtual Datacenters to meet the complex and challenging demands of our customers."
-- Mark Leonard, CIO, Colt Technology Services

"BlueLock has experienced tremendous interest and acceptance in VMware vCloud Datacenter Services since the beta launch last fall. Enterprise IT is starting to leverage the cloud to more quickly get started on projects, grow and shrink their environments according to current needs and move workloads to and from the public and private cloud without worries of lock-in. General availability will allow more customers to experience public cloud computing based on the proven VMware technologies they already use."
-- Pat O'Day, CTO, BlueLock

When it comes to IoT in the enterprise, namely the commercial building and hospitality markets, a benefit not getting the attention it deserves is energy efficiency, and IoT’s direct impact on a cleaner, greener environment when installed in smart buildings. Until now clean technology was offered piecemeal and led with point solutions that require significant systems integration to orchestrate and deploy. There didn't exist a 'top down' approach that can manage and monitor the way a Smart Building actually breathes - immediately flagging overheating in a closet or over cooling in unoccupied ho...

Mobile messaging has been a popular communication channel for more than 20 years. Finnish engineer Matti Makkonen invented the idea for SMS (Short Message Service) in 1984, making his vision a reality on December 3, 1992 by sending the first message ("Happy Christmas") from a PC to a cell phone. Since then, the technology has evolved immensely, from both a technology standpoint, and in our everyday uses for it. Originally used for person-to-person (P2P) communication, i.e., Sally sends a text message to Betty – mobile messaging now offers tremendous value to businesses for customer and empl...

You have your devices and your data, but what about the rest of your Internet of Things story? Two popular classes of technologies that nicely handle the Big Data analytics for Internet of Things are Apache Hadoop and NoSQL. Hadoop is designed for parallelizing analytical work across many servers and is ideal for the massive data volumes you create with IoT devices. NoSQL databases such as Apache HBase are ideal for storing and retrieving IoT data as “time series data.”
Clearly the way forward is to move to cloud be it bare metal, VMs or containers. One aspect of the current public clouds that is slowing this cloud migration is cloud lock-in. Every cloud vendor is trying to make it very difficult to move out once a customer has chosen their cloud. In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Naveen Nimmu, CEO of Clouber, Inc., will advocate that making the inter-cloud migration as simple as changing airlines would help the entire industry to quickly adopt the cloud without worrying about any lock-in fears. In fact by having standard APIs for IaaS would help PaaS expl...
