ARM Chief to Quit

His replacement will be ARM president Simon Segars, 45, who’s been at ARM for 22 years

In a surprise development ARM CEO Warren East, 51, said Tuesday that he'll step down on the first of July after a 12-year run that's seen ARM chips used in almost all mobile widgets and mobile widgets become a primary computing form factor.

His replacement will be ARM president Simon Segars, 45, who's been at ARM for 22 years and worked on many of the early ARM chips.

East said Tuesday the job needed more vigor than he can muster and that he wants to do something broader than microprocessors. He said he has no immediate plans but wouldn't compete with ARM.

ARM now licenses its designs to 300 chipmakers that customize them and pay ARM an upfront fee and a per-piece royalty.

ARM's next trick will be to tangle with Intel in the server market.

ARM claims to be developing widgetry that's six or seven years ahead of the market. Its current strategy won't change. Roughly 41 billion ARM chips currently ship a year.

Intel chief Paul Otellini is supposed to step down in May and the company has named no successor yet.

ARM shares dropped 2% on the news then regained some of its losses.
