RSA interview with Paige Leidig, SVP, CipherCloud

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Please tell us, what is CipherCloud all about and what do you do?

Paige Leidig: CipherCloud enables companies to accelerate their adoption of cloud applications while ensuring visibility and control of their data. CipherCloud delivers data privacy, regulatory compliance, and data residency in the Cloud through an open platform that provides comprehensive data discovery, protection (AES encryption, tokenization, data loss prevention, key management, and malware detection) and activity and anomaly monitoring services.

What are you launching at RSA?

Leidig: We are announcing our "discover, protect, monitor" platform strategy to enable enterprises to holistically protect sensitive information in the cloud. The strategy is a three phase cycle:

  • Discover - The first step is discovery. To determine the security controls their data requires, enterprises must first identify and classify content that is sensitive, proprietary or regulated before it goes to the cloud. Visibility tools likedata discovery provide the actionable intelligence companies need in order to find and apply the right type of protection to comply with regional and industry specific privacy laws.
  • Protect - This is the core of any cloud security strategy. As data thefts escalate, enterprises need security controls that provide robust and granular level data protection to mitigate against compromise without locking outauthorized users. By delivering searchable strong encryption, tokenization, data loss prevention, key management, and malware detection, CipherCloud enables enterprises to seamlessly extend data protection from on premise to thecloud.
  • Monitor - This delivers detailed information on all logging, tracking, and auditing of user activities across all cloud applications. Information is aggregated and monitored resulting in the ability to quickly zero-in on violations ofpolicies, identify anomalous patterns, and flag potential security breaches. Examples could include excessive access from locations known to harbor malicious activity or an extreme number of uploads and downloads of data over a shortperiod of time by a particular user indicating malicious intent.

Who is your target audience and how do you intend to reach them? What is the biggest challenge you face right now in telling your story and winning over new clients?

Leidig: Enterprises in the following industries - financial services, insurance, healthcare, insurance, telco, retail, government, and manufacturing etc. We engage with customers through our cloud application partners including Salesforce.com and Box and direct B2B sales channel. In a sense, Edward Snowden's leaks have heightened awareness of the risks in cloud. However, the word is still not viral yet that it's now possible to apply Searchable Strong Encryption - that delivers AES -256- bit encryption, the highest commercially available level to protect data in cloud applications while preserving cloud functionality and usability

How do you differentiate from your competitors?

Leidig: With over 2.6M users benefiting from CipherCloud technology, CipherCloud is the clear leader in cloud information protection. No one else offers a centralized platform to discover, protect and monitor sensitive data going to into cloud applications.

What business or technology could yours disrupt?

Leidig: Cloud is disrupting how enterprises get things done. We are the bridge that enables enterprises to accelerate their adoption of the cloud while protecting their sensitive data.

Who founded the company, when? What can you tell me about the story of the company's founding?

Leidig: Pravin Kothari, an ArcSight cofounder, founded CipherCloud in late 2010 because he saw a huge enterprise security gap in the cloud application layer. Cloud-based services gained popularity but a different model was needed to fully protect information as it moved out of the enterprise's control and into third party clouds. Pravin started by addressing the most imminent need - making searchable strong encryption work for the cloud and giving the keys to the enterprise so that only they have access to the clear text data and the keys that would unscramble the data. Since then, we built out additional security, visibility and monitoring controls (see responses to Q2) to help enterprises continue to accelerate their adoption of the cloud while overcoming the risks.
