Cold Hard Facts on Enterprise Cloud Use and Implications for Cloud Security

Skyhigh Network Cloud Adoption & Risk Report Summarizes Actual Use of Cloud Services within the Enterprise

Here at Skyhigh Networks, we recently released the second edition of the Cloud Adoption and Risk Report. As with the first edition of the report, the purpose of the report is to provide hard data on the actual use of cloud services within enterprises of all sizes. This report summarizes data from approximately 6 million users across 175 companies and 10 industries.

The key findings from the report are listed below and the full report can be downloaded here.

The Wild West is Getting Wilder
Data from more than 175 organizations suggests the use of cloud services is even more rampant than before. 2,675 cloud services are in use across more than 5.9 million users, as opposed to 2,204 services last quarter (21% growth). 626 cloud services are in use by an organization on average, as opposed to 545 last quarter (15% growth), and the highest number of cloud services in use by an organization is now 2,154 as opposed to 1,769 last quarter (22% growth).

IT: Educate Employees Before They Go Rogue
Employees are unaware of the risks of cloud services and are unknowingly putting their organizations at risk. In fact, only 11% of services used were Skyhigh Enterprise-Ready, meaning that they fully satisfied the most stringent requirements for data protection, identity verification, service security, business practices, and legal protection. Only 15% of services supported multi-factor authentication, only 11% of services encrypted data at rest, and only 4.3% of services were ISO 27001 certified.

IT Beginning to Better Understand Risks, Therefore Blocking 50% Fewer Low and Medium Risk Services
Perhaps the most surprising stat in this report is that IT teams are blocking 50% fewer low and medium risk services. Only 7% of low risk services were blocked, down from 11% the previous quarter. Similarly, 6% of medium risk services were blocked, down from 14% in the previous quarter. One justification for this is that IT teams are leveraging services like Skyhigh to quickly and efficiently understand risks of cloud services.
Global Social Media Providers Gain Traction Last quarter all of the top 10 most used social media services were based in the US. Today, 4 of the top 10 most widely used social media services are based outside of the US. These include Weibo and RenRen from China, VK from Russia and Badoo from the UK.

Tracking Services Fastest Growing Category
Admittedly from a small base, but tracking services grew 108% from previous quarter, despite providing no business value, other than more targeted ads. The majority of the tracking services expose enterprises to malware and watering hole attacks.

Cognitive Computing is becoming the foundation for a new generation of solutions that have the potential to transform business. Unlike traditional approaches to building solutions, a cognitive computing approach allows the data to help determine the way applications are designed. This contrasts with conventional software development that begins with defining logic based on the current way a business operates. In her session at 18th Cloud Expo, Judith S. In his general session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee Atchison, Principal Cloud Architect and Advocate at New Relic, discussed cloud as a ‘better data center’ and how it adds new capacity (faster) and improves application availability (redundancy). The cloud is a ‘Dynamic Tool for Dynamic Apps’ and resource allocation is an integral part of your application architecture, so use only the resources you need and allocate /de-allocate resources on the fly.
A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives. Enter the conversational interface revolution, combining bots we can literally talk with, gesture to, and even direct with our thoughts, with embedded artificial intelligence, wh...
