Cloud Security Stats & Facts Affecting IT Directors By @GiladPN [#Cloud]

The current and future state of the cloud and the benefits it can bring to your organization

Cloud computing is your future operational platform, (virtual) data center, and application platform - all rolled into one concept from multiple vendors. The following are 25 recent statistics about the current and future state of the cloud that will help you understand the breadth of the cloud and the benefits it can bring to your organization and your career.

Facts

  1. Seventy-five percent of IT decision makers, cloud vendors, and business users used the cloud in some way in 2013, compared to 67% the previous year, according to the Future of Cloud Computing Survey.
  2. Forty-four percent annual growth in workloads for the public cloud is expected over the next five years; while only 8.9% growth will be seen in "on-premise" computing workloads, per Barron's.
  3. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) will achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41.3% through 2016, the fastest growing area of public cloud computing the research firm tracks, according to Gartner.
  4. Cloud traffic is expected to grow 4.5-fold by 2017, from 1.2 zettabytes of annual traffic in 2012 to 5.3 zettabytes by 2017, according to Cisco.
  5. Eighty-three percent of new spending on cloud services originates in the U.S. and Western Europe (59% from the US, 24% from Western Europe), according to Forbes.

Cloud Storage Stats and Facts

  1. $4.04 billion in revenue will be generated by the cloud storage industry by 2016, according to a survey conducted by Statista.
  2. 36% of all data will be stored in the cloud by 2016 (up from 7% in 2013), according to Gartner.
  3. Given the choice of only being able to move one application to the cloud, 25% would choose storage, according to Cisco.
  4. One exabyte of data is currently stored in the cloud, according to estimates by Seagate.
  5. Over 60 percent of businesses utilize cloud for performing IT-related operations, says Seagate.
  6. The key benefits to using public cloud storage are disaster recovery (63 percent), centralizing data management (51 percent), and cost savings (44 percent), according to CRN.

Cloud Healthcare Stats and Facts

  1. Fifteen percent of U.S. healthcare systems leverage cloud storage for images, and it's predicted that number will increase to more than 50 percent in the next three years. Currently, about 600 million image procedures are performed each year by healthcare providers in the U.S., according to Seagate.
  2. Nearly one-third of healthcare sector decision makers said they are using cloud applications, and 73% said they are planning to move more applications to the cloud, according to a recent report by Accenture.
  3. Ninety-one percent of businesses said that their cloud providers were making it easier for them to meet government compliance requirements such as HIPAA, according to Microsoft.
  4. Cloud computing for healthcare will be a $5.4 billion industry by 2017, according to MarketAndMarket.

Cloud Challenges Stats and Facts

  1. The top network challenge for preventing a successful implementation of cloud services is availability/reliability of cloud applications, according to Cisco.
  2. Ninety-four percent of businesses reported that they saw an improvement in security and 75% said that network availability improved after switching to cloud computing, according to Microsoft.
  3. In 2014, the number of respondents who regard cloud security as a significant challenge has decreased among both Cloud Beginners and Cloud Focused pros according to the 2014 State of the Cloud Survey.
  4. Cloud adoption pioneers generally agree that the issues that tend to preclude cloud adoption in the first place, especially security, integration, vendor-lock-in, "are unfounded," according to Computer magazine and IEEE Computer Society.

Machine Learning helps make complex systems more efficient. By applying advanced Machine Learning techniques such as Cognitive Fingerprinting, wind project operators can utilize these tools to learn from collected data, detect regular patterns, and optimize their own operations. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Stuart Gillen, Director of Business Development at SparkCognition, discussed how research has demonstrated the value of Machine Learning in delivering next generation analytics to impr...
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...
