A finger on every pulse in an organization

Keeping data from getting out into the wild or being damaged by cyber attackers is what keeps CISOs, the executive team and boards of directors up at night. To protect organizations, cybersecurity needs to be automated and real-time, it needs to learn contextually like we do and it needs to monitor every corner of the network in a way that organizations can afford without sacrificing coverage.

The deeper or more distributed a network is, the harder it is to detect cyberattacks. Remote sites are often the most vulnerable because the security systems at headquarters are too costly to deploy everywhere and budgets do not allow for the hiring of security analysts at remote sites. Attackers know these sites are not monitored, so they use them as a side door through which they can spy and spread their way deep into internal network segments where they can steal or destroy key assets.

To address this issue, the industry needs a new approach. There is a growing requirement for cybersecurity monitoring and detection across all sites of an organization because, as we have seen, attackers look to invade the network where security is the weakest. Monitoring and protection needs to extend deeper into internal segments where the majority of an attack occurs as the intruder spies, spreads and steals. These types of solutions need to be easy to deploy, fully automated and detect attacks in real-time so organizations can avoid adding IT staff at every location.

Dedicated sensors for automated breach detection are a way to cost-effectively reach these far-flung locations and internal network segment. Sensors provide organizations full-fidelity security by monitoring network traffic rather than simply analyzing flow data (e.g., NetFlow). The result automatically detects indicators of attacks across the entire network - including at remote sites or on internal segments - with a single unified view of their risk profile. The new solution from Vectra Networks, for example, can be installed at any remote site - a retail store, a bank branch, or a healthcare clinic - by anyone who can connect a power plug and an RJ-45 connector.

Sensors at remote sites or on internal segments should be able to quickly become the eyes and ears of centralized software, automating threat detections across an entire organization and correlating the threats to the hosts that are under attack. By correlating thousands of discrete security events over time into a single detection and then correlating hundreds of detections to a handful of hosts, a security team has the prioritization and insight to take quick action to stop or mitigate loss.

With the focus on breaches and security at an all-time high, cyber criminals will continue to get more creative to steal organizations' data. With low capital and operational cost of automated breach detection sensors, organizations can ensure that remote sites are no longer the easy entry point for cyber-attacks to begin.
