Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks have become the primary threat to the availability of networks and online services

Cloud DDoS Mitigation: How Do You Know It's Right?

Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks have become the primary threat to the availability of networks and online services and the peak attack sizes have grown by a factor of more than 50 over the last 10 years. Today, botnets and easy-to-use tools for launching DDoS attacks have enabled a big increase in the number of attacks and the traffic they generate. As the attacks have evolved, so have the tools and services to stop them. The best current practice is to implement a strong hybrid defense that tightly integrates on-premise equipment for always-on protection with a cloud-based mitigation solution capable of handling the largest and most complex attacks.

Selecting a volumetric DDoS mitigation provider is a serious decision. If you choose the wrong one, it probably means that your network is down, costing you thousands of dollars in revenue and operational loss, and potentially resulting in reputational damage. Switching costs are high, potentially causing you to suffer through inefficiencies and inconveniences for extended time periods. So how do you ensure you're making the best choice upfront?

Key factors when selecting in a Cloud DDoS mitigation provider:

Predictive pricing: Nobody wants to be hit with high hidden costs. You're paying for a service, and you want that service to fit your needs. A cloud mitigation service should be priced based on your clean traffic, not attack size, and have the right number of mitigations included to meet your needs.

Routine end to end testing: Your network is dynamic and your cloud mitigation service should be, too. Regular end to end testing is critical to ensure that your service will work as expected during an attack. These tests should come standard with your service.

Workflow flexibility: A cloud mitigation service should align with your existing workflow. Managing DDoS mitigation is a coordinated effort between you and your cloud mitigation service. Ensuring that the service works seamlessly with your existing processes will minimize any impact to your business processes.

Transparency: Nobody likes black boxes. You should expect clear communication and transparency while being mitigated through your cloud service. Without clear insight into what actions are being taken on your behalf, troubleshooting becomes difficult to impossible, costing you valuable time.

Proven Expertise: You are not just buying a service; you are buying peace of mind that DDoS will not be a problem moving forward. You want to rely on highly trained experts that deal with DDoS on a daily basis to protect your network.

Selecting the right cloud DDoS mitigation provider will allow you to get the protection your business needs without taking on the burden of deploying and operationalizing the solution yourself. That's a very attractive solution for most businesses today who are dealing with already overwhelmed and understaffed security and network teams.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
