Five simple steps you need to take when you know an attack or breach is imminent

The Titanic and Your Network: 37 Seconds from Disaster?

Put yourself in the shoes of Captain Edward Smith of the RMS Titanic, seconds after the iceberg was reported to him and seconds (there were 37 of them, reportedly) before he reacted. In this critical timeframe - this brief space of time when the inevitability of disaster became clear - was the great ship's fate decided?

Like the maritime world before marine radar, there are times in IT security when the iceberg of an attack remains shrouded in fog and invisible. Yet there are also times when disaster is clearly right in front of us. It is these times - when we can see the data breach coming and need to steer the ship around it - that truly test our foresight.

When Can You See It Coming?
There are many clear indicators of impending attacks and scenarios in which attacks are likely. The question is whether we're aware of them and are we ready to react accordingly. For example, how would your organization react when:

  • A computer with organizational credentials is stolen
    When an employee laptop with patient information was stolen recently, Rhode Island's largest health care provider LifeSpan didn't waste any time. In addition to publicly notifying patients of the possible leak, the company realized that network credentials on employee devices can provide easy access to even more sensitive data in the network. Clearly acting according to pre-defined policy, LifeSpan changed all relevant usernames, passwords, etc. - and likely avoided a much more damaging breach.
  • Employee emails and data are found in data dumps
    Databreaches.net recently notified the University of Georgia that more than 4800 records containing former and current student and staff email addresses and passwords, in some cases with usernames and IP addresses, had been found in a data dump. Leakage of an organization's email addresses and data can expose individuals to targeted phishing attacks. Moreover, the release of personal data such as birthdays, spouse or pet names, and other miscellaneous information that often comprise user passwords can be used for social engineering attacks and endanger organizational assets. As of this writing, the university's IT department had not yet issued a statement about what actions it took, if any, to mitigate the potential damages of this breach.
  • A new zero-day vulnerability is reported but not yet fixed
    The moment a zero-day vulnerability is discovered or publicized, the race is on. Hackers rush to exploit the vulnerability, even as vendors and their clients scramble to plug the holes. Just weeks ago, a list of exploits that target systems and servers running Windows was released by the ‘Shadow Brokers' hacking group. Savvy IT professionals watch for these lists, and make sure that tools used in their organizations are patched or even taken offline until the danger has passed. Once a vulnerability has been discovered, or another organization has been hit with a breach exploiting a vulnerability - the assumption should be that you're next.
  • You identify infiltration attempts
    When your existing perimeter defenses identify attempts at penetration - maybe you've been hacked, and maybe you haven't. Infiltration attempts are not always big noisy events. When security teams start to identify continuous, low frequency noise, such as reports of a phishing emails from employees or blocked URLs by the gateway, etc., they need to put on alert. When somebody is checking your defenses, it's clear that you're being targeted. When you know you're being attacked, your assumption should be the attack may have already succeeded.

What Can Organizations Do?
After-the-fact analyses are always right. After the fact, after the attack that succeeded to steal IP or compromise PII- everyone knows what they should have done. The trick is to take the steps now that prevent damage from the next attack. Especially as relates to the red flags listed above, there are a number of fairly simple steps organizations can take, including:

Check your defenses
Whenever a red flag appears, take the opportunity to thoroughly check the organization's firewall, anti-malware and other security tools to make sure that all are up to date and configured correctly.

Renew credentials
Most organizations have a policy requiring periodic password changes. If an attack is on the horizon, or an organizational asset has been stolen or breached, consider enforcing an ad-hoc password change across the entire organization.

Install latest software patches
Most successful attacks are caused by known viruses and malware. Installing system and software updates is an effective defensive step. Software makers release updates to address specific security threats, and the most recent software releases often offer enhanced features and capabilities. Thus, patches and updates make both business and security sense. Installing updates is not always simple, and companies sometimes drag their feet trying to avoid the process. However, stalling is often not a good approach to cybersecurity.

Educate your employees
Most employees are not security experts. According to the Verizon Breach Investigations Report, almost 25 percent of recipients open phishing emails, and 11 percent open attachments. A concrete threat can be a good opportunity to make employees aware of the requirement for security and their critical role in protecting the organization. Employees must be warned about using insecure processes - such as unauthorized websites and shadow IT tools - and shown how their daily activities can lead to undesired endpoint or network penetration. Naturally, these lessons must be reinforced periodically to ensure that they are not forgotten - and a looming crisis can actually contribute to driving the message home.

Install intelligent post-breach detection tools
Today, there are a great many detection (identification and tracking) tools. However, one of the more effective techniques for automating the process of detection is deception. Effective deception makes use of two major components: decoys and lures (also referred to as "breadcrumbs"). Located inside an organization's network, these decoys - false endpoints, web servers, database servers, etc. - mimic the behavior of actual assets in the IT environment. Lures, the second component, are planted on real assets in order to point the attackers into accessing the decoys. Lures come in the form of registry keys, files, emails, browsing history, cookies, etc. Once an attacker takes the bait and taps a decoy, the attack is detected.

Intelligent deception platforms make use of ongoing traffic analysis to gather knowledge about the organization's IT environment - including assets and activities, which applications run and when, what assets are accessed, browsing habits, and more. By understanding the way the network is built, intelligent deception platforms can create more realistic decoys and lures, and place them in the right locations for attackers to find and use.

The Bottom Line
Unlike the Titanic, the ships of modern IT can maneuver quite agilely. When the iceberg is right in front of us, we have the option of taking steps - some simple and some more complex - to avoid hitting it. The trick, as Captain Smith could attest had he not gone down with the ship, is seeing the shape in the fog early, understanding that it's an iceberg, and knowing how to maneuver to safety.
