SANS Institute Hosts Discussion on Hard Problems in IT Security and Creative Solutions in Mesa, Arizona

BETHESDA, MD -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 01/17/08 -- Faced with new and growing numbers of Web site attacks, increasingly sophisticated socially engineered exploits, and rapidly growing botnets, information security professionals must contend with a rapidly changing cyber environment in order to combat those with nefarious intent. Sponsored by the SANS Institute, a panel discussion entitled "Hard Problems in IT Security and Creative Solutions" will be led by industry-recognized security expert Dr. Eric Cole at the SANS Phoenix 2008 computer and network security training event in Mesa, Arizona. The panel discussion will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Hilton Phoenix East/Mesa. Media representatives are invited to attend. For more information, visit http://www.sans.org/info/22499.

Enterprises are confronting many new kinds of computer and network attacks and incidents, and these changes lead to new problems and issues for which there are no apparent, easy solutions. Fixing many of these problems requires creative solutions, and experience, to see what works and what does not work. However, too often, security professionals experience the dilemma of not having the time to experiment and figure out these solutions.

"Hard Problems in IT Security and Creative Solutions" will help security professionals by addressing many current, challenging situations through the experience of five SANS Instructors, including Dr. Eric Cole, Mr. Rob Lee, Mr. Jonathan Ham, Mr. Chris Brenton, and Mr. John Strand. Together, these panelists draw on over 50 years of hands-on experience and research in improving the state of information systems security.

Panelists will address audience questions and share some of the particularly difficult problems they have recently encountered in IT security -- such as full disk encryption and data protection -- and what they did, specifically, to solve the problem. SANS instructors have extensive experience dealing with a variety of problems and often create or contribute to solutions that are unique, affordable, and effective. Attendees can expect to learn cost-saving tips for being as productive as possible in their network security environments.

The panel discussion complements a week of technical and management training for information technology security professionals during SANS Phoenix 2008. Some of the most popular courses include "Security Essentials," for the language and underlying theory of computer security and critical knowledge required to effectively secure systems and organizations. "Hacker Techniques, Exploits & Incident Handling" will provide for hands-on experience in finding vulnerabilities, discovering intrusions, developing an incident handling plan, and legal issues awareness. Other technical courses include "System Forensics, Investigation & Response, and Management," which will cover forensic techniques and tools in a lab-style setting, and "Browser Forensics," a short, skills-based course, teaches techniques for conducting Web browser forensics and pulling evidence from an investigation environment.

"SANS® +S(TM) Training Program for the CISSP® Certification Exam" is also being offered. The two most popular and trusted network and information security certifications today are the CISSP (Certified Information System Security professional) from (ISC)²® and the GSEC (GIAC Security Essentials Certification) from the SANS Institute. While there are many CISSP certification exam training courses, few yield the results of SANS' teaching. SANS' unique approach has produced over a 98% pass rate. By comparison, the U.S. national average is around 70% for other prep courses.

About SANS. SANS (www.sans.org) was established in 1989 as a cooperative research and education organization. Its programs reach more than 215,000 security professionals, auditors, system administrators, network administrators, chief information security officers, and CIOs who share the lessons they are learning and jointly find solutions to the challenges they face. At the heart of SANS are the many security practitioners in government agencies, corporations, and universities around the world who invest hundreds of hours each year in research and teaching to help the entire information security community. In 2005, the SANS Technology Institute was created as a degree-granting affiliate to develop the information security technology leaders needed to help strengthen the world-wide defensive information community. The SANS Technology Institute is one of the nation's leading graduate schools devoted to the study of information security.

Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC), another SANS affiliate, provides IT security professionals with certification in the areas of security administration, management, operations, legal, audit, and software security. GIAC assures and validates that certified individuals have practical awareness, knowledge, and skills in key areas of computer, network, and software security.

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
