American Security Challenge Announces Admiral James Loy as 2009 Patriot Award Recipient

WASHINGTON, May 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Security Challenge, a non-profit event that seeks to move emerging security technologies to market faster, today announced that Admiral James Loy has been selected for the prestigious Patriot Award for 2009. "We had numerous submissions that represented many of the best people in our field - Admiral Loy was selected because of his heroic work on September 11th, his instrumental role at the Transportation Security Administration in preparing our government to respond and prevent terrorists from striking again and his subsequent work in the private sector," said Roger London, Chairman of the Challenge.

"I am honored and humbled by this recognition of my work for pursuing what I consider to be my duty to my country. I accept the Patriot Award and appreciate all it stands for to recognize those who work to assure we remain vigilant and aware of any impending threats to our way of life," said Admiral Loy.

Loy, Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard during the September 11th attacks retired as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security after a 45 year career in public service. He was involved in all aspects of consolidating 22 separate agencies into one unified Cabinet department as well as managing the day-to-day activities of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Prior to the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security in 2002, Admiral Loy served in the Department of Transportation as Deputy Under Secretary for Security and Chief Operating Officer of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and later as Under Secretary for Security. In these roles, he served as the first administrator of the newly created TSA, which is responsible for protecting the Nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce. Admiral Loy retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 2002, having served as its Commandant since May 1998. As head of the 90,000 person organization, he restored readiness through workforce development and modernized the Coast Guard's fleet of ships and aircraft.

The American Security Challenge is May 21 in conjunction with the Homeland Security S&T Stakeholders Conference East, presented by the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) with subject matter support provided by the Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
